Description and Review: Presumably inspired by the San Marco festival, IGT’s Masques of San Marco slot combines a tumbling reel feature with a two-in-one slots game (called DualPlay).

Visually, the mask symbols are a little bit creepy but it certainly looks intriguing and different from most other slots games out there.

Like many IGT slot machines, this is not really a game aimed at the casual player. You do have to bet all lines and can, if you feel really lucky, bet ?2000 per spin. The jackpot is a maximum of ?250,000 so there is certainly an incentive for the high roller to play big.

OK, the game itself: Essentially, you have two 20 line slots machines – one on top of the other. So, you can trigger a winning combination on either (or both) with just one spin. This looks cute but, in reality, it’s no different from getting multiple wins on a 40 reel slot.

Like all tumbling reels (here called Freefall), winning combinations disappear and are replaced by new symbols falling from above. The interesting thing about how this works with Masques of San Marco is that symbols from the top reel set can fall on to the bottom reel set.

Generally, the base game is an exercise in losing money quickly (the RTP is around 94%) with a few big wins in between. The big wins can be hefty but this isn’t the game to play if you are down to your last twenty Euros or so. Unless, of course, you didn’t really want those twenty Euros anyway!

Things liven up in the free spins round, where – all of a sudden – you’ve got 20 new paylines in play. You do only start with 6 free spins, but if the magic happens at all on this slot, it happens here.

The free spins can be re-triggered up to 50 times. You’ll be extremely lucky if you trigger it twice, though.

It’s not that Masques of San Marco is boring – it’s not. It’s quite an entertaining way to lose money, but then so is skimming coins across a pond.

There are big wins to be had, but you’ll need to ride the ups and downs of the game to be in with a decent chance of getting them. If you’ve got a healthy bankroll and don’t mind turning it into small change, you may want to take the risk. Otherwise, there are slots with similar features that are more fun.
