Description and Review: Unicorns, Fairies, Hearts, Handsome (ish) Knights and Princesses make up just some of the symbols in Silver Unicorn – Rival’s fairytale themed 20 line slot game. It looks impressive, but then so do most Rival slot machines. Unfortunately, not all of them are much fun to play.
Like many games from this company, Silver Unicorn is on the medium-high variance side with a return to player of 94.82%. That’s not especially appealing, but let’s dive in and play a couple of thousand spins or so to see what’s what.
Checking out the paytable, the first thing you’ll notice is that there are only three symbols that pay out more than your bet size for 3 of a kind wins. Plus neither the Owl nor the Heart will give you back more than your triggering bet for 4 of a kind win. No prizes for guessing which are the most commonly occuring symbols in the base game.
There are expanding wild Unicorn symbols that can appear on Reels 1, 3 and 5, however. Our experience was that we rarely got multiple wins from one spin unless the wild symbol was involved which made the base game a bit of a grind, to be honest. I’d like to see a more even distribution of wins between the regular game and the bonus rounds. – not just in Silver Unicorn, but in Rival slots generally.
Despite the negative tone so far, the base game does have a Jackpot symbol (the Treasure Chest) which pays a whopping 15,000 coins for five of a kind. We’re not high rollers but can definitely see this appealing to the type of slot player who has plenty of disposable income to risk. After all, at a maximum bet size of $50, this would be a huge $750,000 payout.
The game does have two bonuses. One is a standard free spins feature with a 3x multiplier.
We never got more than the 5 free spins (for three scatters) but did manage to trigger the other ‘Pick a Card’ bonus during the free spins round. With the 3x multiplier, this was a hefty win. Silver Unicorn gets an extra point for this.
Actually, the Pick and Card bonus (triggered by three Butterfly icons) is where you’ll generally get the biggest wins. Here you have to match pairs of cards – you are awarded a prize for each pair you match.
This bonus – called the Memory Matching Game – is slightly odd. There’s no time limit imposed: so you can go away, make a coffee, come back, complete the round and still end up with the same win amount. The only difference is that you’ll have a nice hot cup of coffee! I don’t know why they’ve done it this way, but I do like that the prizes were pretty good.
I would say that Silver Unicorn does have some things to recommend it: specifically the huge 15,000 coin jackpot and the Memory Match Round. So if you are either a high-roller or the kind of slots player that likes the potential of medium-high variance slots, you could be well-rewarded. More casual players could find it dull, though.
