Description and Review: Thematically, I’m not really sure what Fire Queen is all about. There’s potions, Pegasus’ (Pegasus-es, Pegasi?!), the Fire Queen herself and jewellery among the symbols. I guess Williams are going for a fantasy-Amazon sorcery kind of feel here. It’s a bit of a mish-mash though and doesn’t really work.

The slot itself is one of WMS’ ‘Double Money Burst’ games. In land based casinos, you’ve got slots like Dean Martin and Neptune’s Quest that use this game engine. However, online, there is currently only Elvis: The King Lives. As Elvis was voted the 2013 Slots Universe top slot, the 100 line Fire Queen has a lot to live up to.

Once again, you’ve got two small 2×2 reel sets to the left of a larger 3×6 reelset. Wins start on one (or both) of the left reels and continue on to the 3×6 reelset. So, if you get two ‘Q’ symbols on adjacent reels of the top 2×2 reelset and then another on the first reel of the larger reel set, that would be three of a kind.

It’s pretty simple once you play for a few minutes, so check out the free play version above this review.

A common feature of a lot of Williams slots is the duplication of one symbol to another set of reels. With this slot, this happens with the wild symbol – the Fire Queen herself. If the Fire Queen appears in any position on one of the 2×2 reel sets, it is automatically duplicated into the same position on the other. At that point, wins are calculated.

To get really decent wins without getting the bonus feature, the wilds are critical. If you get wilds on all three reel sets, you’ll see some decent payouts. Otherwise, wins between 2 and 5 coins are not uncommon. These, of course, suck. While each coin you bet pays for two lines, you are still playing a 100 line slot so a win of 0.05 from a bet of 1.00 is just going to irritate you.

This is really where Fire Queen falls down. All the real prizes are hidden in the bonus round so the base game becomes a drag.

Our in-house WMS guru Alison feels that the free spins round more than makes up for it but I’m not sure I agree.

The most common way to reach the free spins round is by getting 4 matching symbols across the two smaller reel sets. And here you get just 5 free spins plus a 1x total bet prize. To give you some idea, I was betting 1.00 per spin and the average win I got from the free spins feature was 19.75. Not impressive. In fact, terrible.

You can also trigger the free spins with three scattered ‘Firebird Globe-y Crystal Ball Type Thing’ feature symbols on the 3×3 reel-set. As an aside, I’m not certain the feature symbol is actually called the ‘Firebird Globe-y Crystal Ball Type Thing’ but that’s certainly what it looks like.So Where Are Those Huge Wins?

Do you feel lucky, Punk? Well, do ya? Because you’re going to have to be extremely lucky to be in with a chance of getting a real big win out of Fire Queen. You will need 4 matching symbols on the 2×2 reel sets AND scattered feature symbols on each reel of the 3×3 reel set. Then – and only then – will you get into ‘huge win’ territory. You’ll start with a 100x stake win and get 20 free spins. So: I repeat. Do you feel lucky, Punk?

I’ll be completely honest with you. There has been much debate and disagreement about Fire Queen among the review team here. Alison, who loves all things WMS, thinks it’s great and says “it would be boring if all slots played the same way….this only has a 4% or so house edge and you can win well over 100x your total stake”.

She has a point, but – just comparing this to the fantastic Elvis slot Fire Queen is severely lacking in all departments. I know which one I’d rather spend my money on and I suspect most of you reading this review will feel the same.
