Description and Review: Lunaris is the latest in the series of online ‘Colossal Reels’ slots from WMS.

There’s two distinct reel sets and 100 lines, although you pay 1 coin for every two lines bet, so – at minimum bet size – you will be playing for 0.50.

So, what’s Lunaris all about?

Well, honestly, I haven’t got a clue. The theme is sort of nature meets spiritualism meets astrology. Symbols include the moon, winged butterflies, flowers, plants and star signs. I’m sure it will make sense to someone, but I’m definitely not that person!

Luckily, I do understand the game itself.

Lunaris has two distinct reel sets and, unlike some WMS slots, paylines don’t continue from one to another. The result of this is that lower value wins rather than the sort of thing you might see on their Elvis slot are the most common ‘winning’ outcome.

However, Williams do know what they’re doing, so they’ve added two stacked symbols, a wild that occurs fairly often and – most interesting of all – a Mystery symbol.

The Mystery symbol is the Butterfly I mentioned earlier in this review. This symbol appears on Reels 1, 3 and 5 of the main reel set. Get one or more of these are you’ll see a bunch of butterflies float over to the other reels. Once all the reels have stopped spinning, all the butterfly symbols will change into a single symbol at random.

Theoretically, you can get as many as 60 Mystery symbols, which I’m sure would lead to a hefty win.

In reality, though, I never did well out of this feature. More than 50% of the time, the butterflies magically transformed into a symbol that didn’t trigger a win at all. Pretty brutal, to be honest.

While it’s good to see that Lunaris isn’t one of Williams’ super high variance slots, having a RTP of just over 96%, most of the wins are poor. You will need to do well in the bonus round to really come away from this one with a big Moon-sized smile on your face.

The bonus round does use a different set of reels altogether, with more frequent wins, but again, I didn’t find it particularly satisfying or enjoyable.

Lunaris is one of those slots that promises much and never really delivers.

Yes, you could get 30, 45 or even 60 mystery symbols in the base game. Yes, you could get 6 bonus symbols and trigger a 25x total bet + 25 free spins prize. Yes, you could retrigger the free spins several times. All of these things are possible, but all are very, very unlikely. And, in the meantime, you’ll be playing a dull slot without much to keep you interested.

The reels may look colossal but the wins are anything but. Lunaris lacks both entertainment value and realistic win potential. A miss.

Game Information: 9 Reels, 100 Payline Slot Machine.

Wild Symbol: Lunar Clock Face. This substitutes for all except the Bonus and Mystery symbols. The Wild symbol does not appear on Reel 1 of the larger reel set.

Mystery Symbol: The Butterfly. This appears on Reels 1, 3 and 5 of the left reel set. Each Mystery symbol awards 5, 8, 10, 15 or 20 Reveals. These float into random positions on the large reels and, when the reels have stopped, reveal one symbol from the paytable (not the Bonus). Any wins are then calculated.

Scatter Symbol: The Caterpillar symbol is scattered. It appears on Reels 1, 3 and 5 of both reel sets.

Three or more triggers the bonus, free spins round.

Three scatters gives 8 free spins and a 2x total bet prize, four awards 12 free spins and a 10x total bet prize, five awards 20 free spins and a 20x total bet prize and six scatters gives 25 free spins and a 25x total bet prize.

The free spins use an alternate reelset and can be re-triggered.

Coin Sizes: 0.01 to 5.00 bet per two lines.
